Hannes Bohinc and Giancarlo Cangiano in SNAV OSG, followed up yesterday’s PowerPole win with victory in the first round of the Powerboat P1 World Championship, albeit in controversial fashion.

The race started with an exciting three way battle for the lead between SNAV OSG, Lucas Oil and Cigarette Smash Poker although by the second lap the Cigarette boat of Italians Luca Fendi and Matteo Nicolini was starting to take control.

Behind them, Bohinc and Cangiano in the mercury-powered Outerlimits were tracking Lucas Oil until spinning on lap 7.

The Cigarette eventually crossed the chequered flag with a convincing margin, followed by the all-American Lucas Oil piloted by Nigel Hook and Joe Sgro.

However, both the Cigarette and Lucas Oil boats had passed on the wrong side of the first buoy and received 3 minute time penalties, demoting them to second and third respectively and giving OSG Racing maximum points.

It was a creditable start for Austrian Bohinc and his Italian team principal, the two former world champions, racing together for the very first time.

Hannes Bohinc, Driver, OSG Racing:
“This was a good result. It was our first race together and my first competitive experience in a petrol boat, so we are happy to be on the podium. The Cigarette was clearly faster than us and should have won. I’m sure they will be looking to make amends tomorrow. The spin resulted from a SuperSport boat closing the gap as we took them on the inside of the turn. It was a ‘moment’, no more than that and we recovered well but could not make up the ground. Now we are looking forward to tomorrow’s longer race.

Giancarlo Cangiano, Team Owner and Throttleman, OSG Racing:
“In two days of racing together we have taken pole and maximum points in our first race. That is a good start and our reputations are preserved. We will learn from today and improve. Our boat was well prepared and ran without incident but it performs better in rough waters and today could not have been flatter.”
